What are storyboards? Discover the magic of reading to a group

Reading aloud is one of the most beautiful moments of the day. But… anyone who has ever read to a group of children knows: it can sometimes be quite a challenge. Illustrations that are not clearly visible, short attention spans, or fumbling with a book you have to hold and turn. That's why story cards exist: a practical and magical way to make reading aloud even more fun.

What are storyboards?

Storyboards are loose, large illustrations from a picture book, often printed on sturdy A3-sized paper. You slide them one by one into a kamishibai (Japanese storytelling theatre) or simply hold them in your hand. On the back of each card is the corresponding text, allowing you to tell the story while the children enjoy the large illustrations.

At HÖNGRY, there are storyboards for almost all our picture books, from FramBOOS to Wat als ik pof and Goed in mijn schil. This way, every fruity adventure can come to life in an extra big way.

How do you use storyboards?

Storyboards can be used in various ways, in the classroom, childcare, the library, or at home:

  • Reading aloud in a group: place the cards in a storytelling theatre or hold them. All children - even those at the back of the circle - can clearly see the illustrations.
  • Interactive reading aloud: because the cards are loose, you can more easily pause, ask questions, or involve the children in what is happening.
  • As a conversation starter: use one card to start a conversation about emotions, friendship, adventures, or healthy eating.
  • Creative activity: let children create a follow-up drawing based on a specific card.
  • Drama game: let children choose a card and act out the scene or invent sounds for it. This brings the story to life.
  • Thematic work: link a card to a theme (e.g., emotions, self-confidence, friendship, music, space, nutrition) and delve deeper into it with additional activities or group discussions.

What are the advantages of storyboards?

Storyboards have several advantages, especially for reading moments in groups:

  • Large, clear illustrations → visible to the whole group.
  • Calm and focus → you no longer have to struggle with a book that keeps closing.
  • Enhanced experience → children feel more involved in the story.
  • Sturdy and durable → less fragile than a book, and easy to carry.
  • Flexible → use them as a whole, or individually as a stimulus for an activity.
